Did any of you read the statistics on the hospital bugs situation?
It was in Saturday’s Irish Times.
The figures were alarming.
The Blackrock Clinic rated high in the Bugs Department.
In fact, compared to the less salubrious hospitals, its rates were way up. Crawling with bugs.

Himself and meself are paying an arm and a leg to the VHI for coverage at the Mater Private (which fared much better) and the Blackrock in order to have access to the High Tech. Must we bring in our own bottle of Parozone and give the room a good once over, whilst clutching our chests and screaming with pain?
When the consultant enters the room, do I say “Don’t touch me, you bastard! I don’t know where you’ve been!”. I’m collecting brown paper bags to wear over our heads for protection.
Mount Carmel Hospital is way down on the infectious bus department. I had the c-section there and enjoyed four weeks and good food and every possible luxury. Bring back the nuns, I say!!
So what to do? What we are paying yearly to the VHI would get us a bloomin’ good holiday every year. Do we give up the higher plan and go down one, or maybe we should leave it in the Lap of The Gods and throw ourselves at the mercy of the Public Sector. At least we could afford to have a good time while Grandad is still in one piece.
All advice would be appreciated.
I understand your dilemma. We are on the higher scheme too. There is so much profile about bugs it is bound to get sorted soon. It is not rocket science to solve. As you say the Nuns could solve it. It’s a matter of local management running the place with some pride, intelligence and modern cleansing thrown in.
“it is bound to get sorted soon”
Don’t hold your breath John. They’ve been saying that for years.
In America (they have the same problem) they recently discovered that it was Doctors pens and hospital badges/nametags that were the most contaminated… just make sure you get your prescriptions rung in!
Granny - I’ve got it… you can travel to the future to fix it… check out my post at http://www.deborahhadley.com/ Just what you need!
Why didn’t I think of this earlier?
I’ll take my chances Deborah. I’m not parting with no $10.
Yes Granny, bring back the nuns!
Their good clean habits and the clacking of the beads would frighten any bug away!
Just came across your blog today - congrats!- it makes good reading.
I wouldn’t give up on the higher plan with VHI just yet - who knows what way things will go with Mary Harney’s co-located hospitals. Grrr! I’m very against the 2-tier health system she insists on promoting but if she succeeds in getting her way, one thing’s for certain - the public hospital system will be swamped with people who are unable to afford their usual health insurance. Health insurance rates will soar.
I can’t afford to ‘give up’ my health insurance at the moment.
